    Upstream sync release: SchildiChat Next is now based on Element X 26.09.4 (previously ~26.07.1). All MSC2545 sticker/emoticon features from v0.11.13 are preserved and re-verified against the new base.

    What's new

    • Message removal reason: you can now give a short reason when removing (redacting) your own message, confirmed in a clearer dialog before it's gone.
    • Settings reorganised: Settings is split into App settings and Account settings. Your user status now sits next to the current account header, the other-accounts section is collapsible, and "Blocked users" moved to the Moderation & safety screen.
    • Better global search: recent searches are remembered and shown in global search, and room results are filtered to rooms you're actually joined.
    • Voice messages: the play-progress bar now animates smoothly instead of jumping.
    • New timeline renderer (experimental): a rewritten timeline event renderer was added behind a feature flag (off by default) with linkification and Markdown header (h1–h6) support — groundwork for future UI work, not enabled in this release.
    • More reliable sync: the background sync service restarts itself if it stops on an error, no longer auto-restarts when intentionally terminated, and starts explicitly after you finish signing in.
    • Bug fixes: forwarding a message inside a thread now works; persistent loading indicators show on placeholders that could otherwise spin forever; plus a batch of upstream bug fixes and polish.

    • Unified picker drawer (stickers, emoticons & GIFs in one switchable drawer).
    • Giphy-powered GIF picker.
    • Stickers sent as replies / threaded replies.

    Under the hood

    • matrix-rust-sdk bindings upgraded to v26.09.26; Compose BOM 2026.09.00, Coil 3.6.2, media3 1.11.1, Sentry 8.55.0 and other dependency updates.
    • The upstream merge surfaced 20 previously-skipped unit tests (unified-push parsing, rageshake/bug-report, media upload) which are now fixed and passing, plus a space-navigation room-subscription fix — build and test health restored across the merged tree.

    Feature release: unified picker drawer — stickers, emoticons and GIFs now live in one switchable drawer that remembers your last tab.

    What's new

    • Unified picker drawer: stickers, emoticons and GIFs are now in a single bottom drawer with tabs instead of separate pickers. Open it via the sticker button or the "Emoticons" / "GIFs" entries in the "+" attachment menu (rooms and threads). Switch tabs by tapping or swiping.
    • Remembers your tab: the last-used tab is remembered across configuration changes and process death — reopen the drawer and you're where you left off. Entry points still open their intended tab (sticker button → Stickers, menu entries → Emoticons/GIFs).
    • Retry instead of dead ends: if loading sticker/emoticon packs fails, the tab shows an error with a retry button; same for GIF trending/search failures — retry re-runs the load for the current source and recovers when the failure was transient.

    Feature release: GIF picker (Giphy) — send animated GIFs from the "+" attachment menu; stickers now work as replies too.

    What's new

    • New: GIF picker — a "GIFs" entry in the "+" attachment menu (rooms and threads), powered by Giphy: trending on open, debounced search, infinite scroll.
    • Animates everywhere: GIFs are sent as m.image with image/gif — standard Matrix, no shortcode semantics, so they animate in other clients too.
    • Works everywhere: plain messages, replies, and threaded replies.
    • Your key: enable it by entering a Giphy API key in Settings → GIFs (the app ships a public fallback key you can use); the menu entry only appears once a key is set. Search terms go to api.giphy.com only; the key is never logged.
    • Robust error handling: rate limits, offline, empty results, oversized GIFs and invalid/expired keys each get a dedicated message; a failed or cancelled send never blocks the next one.
    • Stickers honor replies now: sending a sticker as a reply or threaded reply keeps the reply context (and shows the reply banner). Replies sent before this version will not retroactively show banners.
    • Pickers close after sending and clear the composer's reply mode.

    Update 2026-10-05: the APKs above were rebuilt and re-uploaded in place (same version, same signing key). They fix two GIF picker bugs found during device testing: a crash when loading further pages of results, and static previews — the grid now plays the animations.     Feature release: multi-image selection when creating or editing a sticker & emoticon pack (MSC2545).

    What's new

    • Add Images: the gallery picker in the sticker/emoticon pack editor now lets you select several images at once — up to 20 per selection — instead of one at a time.

    • Uploading X/Y…: the selected images are uploaded one by one with a live progress indicator, so you can watch a whole pack being built in one go.

    • Partial failures are survivable: if one image fails to upload, the error is reported and the remaining images still go through; the pack keeps everything that succeeded.

    • Newest first: newly added images are prepended, so the images you just picked appear at the top of the pack.

    • Applies to both sticker packs and emoticon packs (same editor).

    What's new

Custom emoticons are listed first; keep typing to filter (prefix matches first). Tap a row to insert the emoji glyph directly into your markdown message.     • Shortcode expansion on send: emoticon shortcodes typed into the draft now expand to inline emotes when the message is sent (MSC2545), so :smile: renders as the actual emoji in the sent message.

    Feature release: a new timeline font size setting, a side-by-side test flavor, and an emoticon-picker fix.

    Features

    • Timeline font size setting: choose small / default / large / extra large for chat message text (Tweaks → Appearance). Timestamps, captions, group headers, state events, read receipts, thread summaries and URL previews scale proportionally, so the whole timeline stays balanced at every level. "Default" keeps the previous behavior exactly.
    • Side-by-side test flavor: builds from this repository can now be installed as chat.schildi.next.msc2545 (SchildiNext 🐢🎨 launcher icon) next to the regular SchildiChat Next / F-Droid app, so store updates can no longer overwrite or block them.

    Fixes

    • Custom emoticon reactions in recent emoji: MSC2545 emoticons used as reactions are now recorded in the recent-emoji list and show up in the reaction picker like built-in emoji, and render correctly in the quick-reaction row above the composer.
    • Emoticon message plain text: messages containing inline emoticons no longer drop the surrounding text when rendered as plain text.

    Bugfix release for MSC2545 sticker & emoticon packs, plus a signing change that fixes installation failures on some devices.

    Fixes

    • Sticker/emoticon pack management: editing or deleting a pack that is visible from another room (via global enablement or a parent space) now acts on the room the pack actually lives in, instead of writing a phantom copy into the open room. Emoticon-only packs are listed in the pack management sheet and survive saving without changes.
    • Emoticon picker: opened from the "+" attachment menu (markdown mode only) instead of a dedicated composer button.
    • De-duplication: image packs shared between a room and its parent spaces no longer appear multiple times in the picker.
    • Installation reliability: release builds are now signed with a dedicated release key instead of a debug certificate — this fixes installations being rejected or silently aborted on devices with strict app verification (e.g. Samsung One UI / Play Protect).

    ⚠️ Signature change — read before installing

    This release is signed with a new key. If you previously installed any SchildiChat Next build, uninstall it first, then install this APK. You will need to log in again; your room history and messages live on the homeserver and are re-downloaded after login.

    Based on Element X Android, in the tradition of SchildiChat for Android.
